Online Coaching or Therapy? What's Right for Expats Living Abroad

You live abroad — maybe here on the Bulgarian coast, maybe elsewhere in Europe — and things aren’t going well. The stress, the loneliness, the breakup, the feeling of having lost your direction. And you’re asking yourself: do I need a coach or a therapist?
Many expats ask themselves this question. And abroad, it becomes even harder, because the familiar points of contact are simply missing. This article helps you sort it out — honestly, and without a sales pitch.
The most important difference in one sentence
Therapy treats mental illness. Coaching supports you through crises, stress, and life transitions.
That sounds simple, but the distinction matters:
- Psychotherapy is the right path if a treatable mental health condition is present — for example a diagnosed depression, an anxiety disorder, PTSD, or addiction. Therapy is regulated healthcare with strict professional rules.
- Coaching is right when you are emotionally strained but fundamentally able to act — when you’re looking for clarity, working through a life crisis or a breakup, building a new start, or simply need solid ground under your feet again.
Why this question is especially hard for expats
If you live abroad, you know the dilemma:
There’s the language. Finding an English-speaking therapist in Bulgaria is hard enough — finding one in your native language is nearly impossible. And you don’t want to discuss your deepest struggles in a foreign language, however well you speak it.
There are the waiting lists. Expats trying to access therapy “back home” often face months of waiting — or are told that residency in their home country is required.
There’s the slow slide. Many expats only realize late that something is wrong. Life abroad is exciting, and if you’re “just stressed,” it’s easy to postpone getting help for a long time.
This is exactly where online coaches like me come in: professional, compassionate support in your own language, by video, anywhere in Europe — no waiting lists, no travel, no threshold to cross.
Signs that coaching is the right fit
Consider coaching if you:
- feel exhausted, overwhelmed, or emotionally “empty,” but can still manage your daily life
- are facing a major transition: separation, moving back home, relocation, or retirement abroad
- experience homesickness, loneliness, or the feeling of never quite arriving anywhere
- know the feeling: “I don’t know what I want anymore”
- are working through a difficult chapter — loss, a farewell, a failed relationship or project
- want clarity and a plan, not just sympathy
Signs that you need a doctor or psychotherapist
Please seek medical or therapeutic help if:
- you have been persistently low or unable to feel joy for weeks, and nothing feels enjoyable anymore
- you suffer from severe sleep problems, panic attacks, or intense anxiety
- you have thoughts of harming yourself or others — in that case, please contact a doctor or a crisis line immediately (from Bulgaria, you can reach international crisis lines online, or call the local emergency number 112)
- you suspect there is “more” going on than stress
And one thing I want to say honestly: I am a coach and psychological consultant, not a physician and not a psychotherapist. If it becomes clear in our first conversation that you need therapeutic help, I will tell you so openly. You deserve that honesty — and it is the reason my discovery call is free of charge.
The path many expats actually take
In practice, it often looks like this: you start with a free discovery call — 20 minutes, no commitment. We clarify where you stand and what you need. If coaching is a fit, I accompany you through several weeks of video sessions. And if necessary, I help you find the way to an English- or German-speaking doctor or therapist — there are reputable online options today.
The bottom line
You don’t have to answer the question “coach or therapist” alone. But you shouldn’t ignore it just because the familiar routes from back home no longer seem reachable. Support in your language, from wherever you are in Europe — that is possible today.
