Imaginative Family Constellation — Gently Understand and Transform Old Patterns
Have you ever noticed yourself reacting in a way that felt “bigger” than the situation deserved — a wave of doubt before an opportunity, a knot in your stomach in certain relationships, a pattern that keeps repeating no matter how often you decide to change it? Very often these reactions are not a flaw in you. They are old, learned responses — many of them shaped long before we had words, in our earliest family experiences.
The Imaginative Family Constellation is a calm, respectful way to bring these hidden patterns into the light — and, step by step, to loosen their grip. You stay in the driver’s seat the entire time. My role is to accompany you; the insights and the change come from you.
What is an Imaginative Family Constellation?
A family constellation is a way of looking at the invisible web of relationships we all grow up in. The core idea is simple: we don’t develop in isolation — we are shaped by the family system around us, and by experiences we often can’t consciously remember.
The imaginative approach works differently from the classic version many people have heard of. Instead of placing other people in a room as stand-ins for your family members, you work entirely with your own inner images — in the safe, private space of your imagination. Nothing has to be shared with a group. Nothing is exposed. You explore, at your own pace, what feels true for you.
This makes the work gentle and deeply personal. You remain the author of your own story throughout.
Where this method comes from — and why I chose it
Working with family systems has a rich and sometimes controversial history, and I think it’s only fair to be transparent about it.
Virginia Satir, one of the pioneers of family therapy, developed “family sculpture” and family reconstruction. Her conviction was hopeful and humane: patterns are not fate — they can be understood and transformed, and people can change through their own strength. That humanistic spirit is the foundation I stand on.
Bert Hellinger later made constellation work known worldwide, but linked it to a rigid theory (his “orders of love”) that many professionals — myself included — consider too normative and, at times, intrusive.
I deliberately chose a third path: the Imaginative Family Constellation developed by the Hamburg psychologists Cora Besser-Siegmund and Harry Siegmund, which builds on the NLP format “Reimprinting” by Robert Dilts. In practice this means:
– We work with inner images, not with other people standing in for your relatives.
– We actively and gently re-code formative experiences — rather than only interpreting them.
– You stay in your full strength and agency: I guide, but you find your own solution.
– It’s not about a “right” system or order — it’s about the perspective that feels congruent for you.
The result is work that is deep, gentle, and effective — and that respects your uniqueness instead of pressing you into a fixed framework.
What can it help with?
People come to this work for many different reasons. It can be a supportive space when you want to:
– Understand recurring patterns in relationships, work, or self-worth
– Explore where a persistent inner “brake,” doubt, or blockage might come from
– Make peace with a difficult chapter of your family story
– Find more clarity before an important life decision
– Feel more grounded, congruent, and free in everyday life
Many clients describe a sense of relief and lightness afterwards — the feeling of finally understanding something that had quietly steered them for years. What surprises people most is often how quickly a long-carried blockage can begin to loosen once the underlying image is seen and gently reshaped.
How a session unfolds
Every session is tailored to you, but the path usually follows a few clear, safe stages:
- Arriving and clarity. We start with what matters to you right now — the pattern, question, or feeling you’d like to explore. No pressure, no need to have it all figured out.
- Setting up the inner picture. Using your own imagination, in a fully protected space, you allow an inner image of the relevant relationships to take shape — exactly as feels right for you.
- Understanding the old imprint. Together we notice how an early sense-impression may still be shaping your reactions today, quietly and without your awareness.
- Gently re-coding. With your current resources and strengths, we “defuse” the old impression and let new, supportive images and sensations take its place.
- The ecological check. Before anything settles, we test it together: does this new inner picture feel congruent and good for you and the people around you? Your inner “yes” is what counts.
- Into everyday life. Finally, we translate the shift into concrete, doable steps — so the change doesn’t stay in the session, but becomes part of your daily life.
You never lose control, and you never have to relive anything painful in order to grow. The work is about resources and possibility, not about digging into wounds.
My approach as your coach
I work resource-oriented and on eye level. That means I don’t hand you a diagnosis or tell you who you are. I trust that you already carry your own solutions within you — my job is to help you reach them.
With over twenty years of experience in crisis intervention and grief support, I bring both structure and genuine warmth to our work. You set the pace. You decide what to explore and what to leave. And you leave each session as the expert on your own life.
Coaching, not therapy — an honest note
Coaching and counselling are about growth, clarity, and self-direction. They are not a substitute for medical or psychotherapeutic treatment, and I make no promises to cure, heal, or diagnose any condition. If you are dealing with a diagnosed mental-health condition or acute crisis, this work can sometimes accompany professional treatment — but not replace it. If you’re unsure whether this is the right fit for you right now, simply ask me in our free consultation; I’ll give you an honest answer.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to know my family history in detail?
No. You don’t need documents, dates, or a complete family tree. We work with what is present for you now — your inner images and felt sense are enough.
Will I have to speak in front of a group or use other people as stand-ins?
No. This is imaginative, one-to-one work. Everything happens in your own imagination, in a private and protected setting.
Is this available online?
Yes. The work translates beautifully to online sessions, so we can meet wherever you are — or in person at my practice in Ravda, Bulgaria.
How many sessions will I need?
That’s individual. Some people find that a single focused session brings a meaningful shift; others prefer to work on a theme over a few sessions. We’ll talk about what makes sense for you, with no pressure.
Is it confidential?
Absolutely. Everything you share is treated in strict confidence.
Curious whether this is right for you?
The best first step is a relaxed, no-obligation conversation. In your free consultation we’ll talk about what’s on your mind and whether the Imaginative Family Constellation could be a good fit — coach-to-you, on eye level.
A gentle first step. No pressure, no commitment.
